Child Safety Standards

Anonium exists so people can speak without being identified. That freedom ends completely at the safety of children. These are the standards we hold, and how we enforce them.

Our standards

We operate a zero-tolerance policy toward child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE) and child sexual abuse material (CSAM). It is the one category where there is nothing to weigh up.

The short version: there is no version of this app in which content that harms a child is tolerated, argued about, or given the benefit of the doubt.

Prohibited conduct

It is an absolute breach of the Terms of Use to use Anonium to:

  • share, request, describe or attempt to obtain child sexual abuse material of any kind;
  • sexualise a minor in any way, including in text, roleplay or fictional framing;
  • groom, solicit or attempt to establish sexual contact with a minor;
  • sexually extort a minor, or threaten to expose material involving one;
  • facilitate, promote, normalise or advertise any of the above, or direct anyone to it elsewhere; or
  • use the service to reach a minor for any of these purposes.

This applies regardless of intent, framing, claimed age, or whether an exchange is described as fiction. There is no exception.

How the app limits risk by design

Several properties of Anonium reduce the ways this service can be misused against a child. They are deliberate:

  • Text only. Anonium sends text and its own built-in stickers, and nothing else. There is no way to send a photo, video, voice note or file, and the app requests no camera, microphone, gallery or storage permission. Image-based abuse material cannot travel through this service.
  • No links. Anything link-like is detected and removed on the sending device before a message is encrypted, so a message cannot be used to point someone to material hosted elsewhere.
  • No discovery. There is no user directory, search, suggestions, nearby function or profiles. Nobody can browse for a person to contact; a conversation begins only when someone shares their own link.
  • Recipient control. Every recipient can block a sender instantly, report a message for human review, pause their link, or renew it, which retires the old link permanently.
  • Rate limiting. Sending and reporting are both rate limited, making mass contact and coordinated abuse impractical.

How to report

Any recipient can report a message from inside the app. Open the conversation, press and hold the message, and choose Report. Reporting sends that message and a small amount of surrounding context for review, and blocks the sender for you immediately.

Because messages are encrypted on the sending device, a report is the only way we can read a message. We cannot see, search or scan anything that has not been reported, which is why reporting matters.

Child safety reports can also be sent directly to [email protected] with “Child Safety” in the subject line. If a child is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services first.

How we respond

  • Reports involving a minor are prioritised ahead of all other reports and reviewed by a person.
  • Where a report is upheld, the account’s ability to send is revoked immediately and permanently. There is no warning and no path back.
  • The associated link code and routing records are destroyed so the address cannot be reused.
  • Reported content is retained only as long as needed to review, act on and where required report it, and is then deleted.
  • Reports made in bad faith, including reports used to harass another person, are themselves a breach of the terms.

Legal reporting

Confirmed child sexual abuse material is reported to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) through the CyberTipline, and to law enforcement where appropriate, consistent with 18 U.S.C. § 2258A. We preserve the relevant material for the period required to support such a report and cooperate with lawful requests from authorities.

We are honest about the limits of what cooperation can produce. Anonium holds no names, email addresses, phone numbers, contact graphs or location history, so what we can provide is confined to what a report contains and the technical records described in the privacy policy. We do not overstate this to anyone, including authorities.

Age requirement

Anonium is for adults aged 18 and over. It is rated accordingly in the app store, and we rely on store-level age rating and gating because we deliberately collect no age or identity information. An account we believe to belong to someone under 18 is closed.

Point of contact

Our designated point of contact for child safety matters, including enquiries from platforms, regulators and law enforcement, is [email protected]. Please include “Child Safety” in the subject line so it is routed ahead of general enquiries.

These standards are reviewed as the service changes, and materially updated versions are published here with a new date.
